Tomaschek believes that in this text, Haemus refers to the mountainous region of the Agathyrsi, and Αὔρας may refer to today’s River Jiu in Romania, because an error in the text is possible and it is likely that it actually refers to the northern (left) tributaries of the Danube. This assumption was accepted by G. Katsarov and B. Gerov, while I. Venedikov and D. Boyadziev only commented that no such river has been identified in Thrace. D. Detschew also accepts Tomaschek’s opinion, supporting that Αὔρας was a Dacian river. Other researchers accept that it was a right tributary, e.g. F. Legrand, who did not attempt to identify it with a present-day river, and V. Georgiev, who suggested that it may be one of the rivers Kana or Senkovitsa in northeastern Bulgaria, which was also accepted by I. Duridanov.

The name has been identified as Thracian by W. Tomaschek, who believes that it may be related to the Zend aurva and Old Indian arva, meaning “fast.” According to D. Detschew, the name simply means “water” and is comparable to other river names with a root meaning “moisture, water”: Aura, Avara in Gaul, Ἄναυρος in Thessaly, and the name of the spring nymph Αὔρα. Furthermore, he is inclined to believe that the personal name Aurotra may also be related to this hydronym. K. Vlahov strongly disagrees with Detschew’s opinion and accepts that the form Aurotra originated from Aulutra through assimilation. Both opinions are unprovable. D. Detschew’s etymology was accepted by Ion Russu, V. Georgiev, and I. Duridanov, who provided Baltic parallels. W. Schmidt classifies the name as an “ancient European” hydronym and links it to the appellative *auros or *aura “water.” The etymologies remain uncertain.
